HGTV Design Star; Poor Scott, Poor Judgement

Ok, I was really surprised to see Sparkle Josh still standing at the end of the night on HGTV's Design Star; a reality show where 10 players, (this season had 11) compete in, of course, design challenges. They are from various backgrounds, some already professional designers with portfolios and others that can't spell portfolio. (just kidding, guys).

On Sunday, the challenge was to take $399 to the 99 cent store and purchase everything they would need to decorate a room. It was actually a lot of fun to watch because these people are really talented and ultra creative. It was amazing to see what they did with some of those items. What made the challenge even more fun was that they didn't have to concern themselves with functionality, only beauty and imagination.

One of the most talented designers on the show was Scott from Santa Barbara, CA. But Scott, what happened? Scott bought just about every 99 cent knick knack he could find, I mean he had a load of it and he decided to use every piece, and I mean every piece of it. I couldn't believe my eyes and apparently neither could the judges, which includes Vern Yip from Trading Spaces fame and one of my favorite "swell" girls and vicious designer, Cynthia Rowley. Scott's room looked like an extremely organized and colorful garage sale. Really, no offense Scott, even the judges told you that the foundation of the design was among the best but you didn't have to actually use 399 items in the room. It was a bit crazy, but anyway, enough Scott bashing. You're a great guy and a great designer. Good luck to you.

Now Scott stood on the chopping block with a guy they nicknamed Sparkle Josh because there was another Josh on the show, who shall I say, was not as flamboyant. His nickname was Organic Josh, his show was canceled in challenge 2. Sparkle Josh's room looked like his wardrobe, and ummm....that's not so good for a room, unless of course, you are a guy thrilled to be called Sparkle Josh.
